Despite a growing literature on the value of family involvement for students with disabilities, there are ongoing misunderstandings about the reasons why culturally and linguistically diverse families of students with disabilities might be less involved with their child at school than other families. This article describes a project conducted with Latino families and with school personnel at schools serving predominantly Latino children that addresses why Latino families may become less involved.

The strategies described in this article emphasize the importance of reaching out to Latino families, seeking their input, empowering them, keeping them informed, and facilitating their child’s transitions. Although Latino parents will vary in the extent to which they take initia tive to become involved, it is important to understand that, for cultural reasons, Latino families, as well as other CLD families, may need clearer signs that schools are interested in involving them in the education of their child. These strategies convey an assurance to families that they are valued and trusted participants in their child’s education.
