Our finding that parents had more expansive views on a successful transition to adulthood for youth with IDD, relative to conventional definitions, has significant implications for future transition plan ning. While these services coincide with families’ transition goals of postsec ondary education and employment, many of the additional elements of transition success mentioned by parents in this study (e.g., physical health, psychological well-being, and transportation) are not always addressed in formal transition planning. Our findings suggest that family goals are more nuanced and expansive than conventional perspectives on tran sition planning and success in adulthood. The perspective of these families is important in guiding future research and practice in the field of adult outcomes.
